Is a Tesla Powerwall right for your house?

Powerwall is no longer the automatic answer, and it is still a straightforward one. It has the longest Australian operating history of any battery you can buy today, the most polished app in the category, and virtual-power-plant support nothing else matches. What it has given up is the price argument at larger sizes and, for three-phase homes, the backup argument. If your house is single-phase and you value a proven product over the lowest cost per kilowatt-hour, it remains an easy shortlist.

The decision Powerwall forces is about your switchboard rather than your budget. Because the unit backs up a single phase, a three-phase home has to accept that only part of the house stays live in an outage, however many units are fitted. That is a structural characteristic, not a fault, and it is the single most common gap between what buyers expect and what they bought. Everything else about the product is deliberately simple: one box, one app, one manufacturer accountable for the lot.

Where Tesla Powerwall actually sits in the Australian market

The longest Australian track record of any home battery, though no longer the default choice.

  • Market tier — Top tier.
  • Capacity — Fixed block, expandable.
  • Most cross-shopped against — Sigenergy SigenStor.

Tesla has been installed here longer than any current competitor, which shows up in the things that only become visible years in — an established service channel, installers who have seen the failure modes, and a fleet old enough to have a track record. The certified-installer model also means the people fitting it have been through the manufacturer’s own training, which narrows the range of workmanship compared with brands anyone can buy. That is a genuine advantage, and it is not a substitute for checking who is actually turning up.

The trade-offs you accept with Tesla Powerwall

  • Single-phase backup, whatever the unit count. Three-phase households need this spelled out on the quote, because adding a second Powerwall does not add a second backed-up phase.
  • Fixed blocks rather than fine increments. Sizing moves in whole units, so a household needing a little more capacity often ends up buying noticeably more than it needed.
  • Cost per kilowatt-hour worsens as the system grows. At larger capacities modular stacks are materially cheaper, which is why big Powerwall systems are a harder argument than single-unit ones.
  • It expects a live internet connection. Patchy wi-fi where the unit is mounted becomes a commissioning problem rather than an inconvenience, so signal at the mounting position is part of the design.
  • No integrated EV charging. If charging a car from your own solar is part of the plan, that is separate hardware here rather than a module in the same stack.
  • Simplicity is the product. If you want to tune every parameter, this is the wrong battery — the appeal is that most households never need to open anything beyond the app.

Tesla Powerwall questions, answered for Australia

How much does a Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh) cost installed in Australia?
Solar Choice's installer network puts Tesla Powerwall at about $1,129 per usable kWh installed, before the federal battery rebate. On that figure a Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh) typically lands around $13,500–$17,500 installed before the federal battery rebate, which takes roughly $3,700 off at that size under the current federal rate. The rebate tapers — the full rate to 14 kWh, 60% of it from 14 to 28 kWh, 15% from 28 to 50 — so a system twice that size (27 kWh) attracts about $5,900, not double. Indicative only — it varies by installer, site and configuration, and installers set their own price. Get 2-3 quotes on the same scope and compare them on after-rebate dollars per usable kWh. Is a Powerwall still the safe choice in 2026?
It is still the most proven choice, which is not quite the same thing. Nothing else sold in Australia has been on local walls as long, and that history is worth something real when you are buying hardware meant to last a decade. Where it is no longer the safe default is on price at larger capacities, and on backup for three-phase homes. Single-phase households buying one unit are the case where it remains hard to argue against.
My house is three-phase. Should I rule Powerwall out?
Not automatically, but go in with clear eyes. During an outage one phase stays live, so you need to decide which circuits matter and confirm they sit on that phase. Plenty of three-phase households are perfectly happy backing up a kitchen, a few power points and the internet. If you want the whole house live through a blackout, look at batteries built around three-phase backup instead, and ask your installer to quote both.
Does Solar Select sell Tesla Powerwalls?
No. We do not sell hardware or take a margin on your system, so we have no commercial reason to steer you to a particular brand. We match you with up to 3 approved installers, subject to current coverage and eligibility, prioritising Tesla-experienced teams where you have asked about Powerwall. You deal with them directly and the service is free for homeowners.
What should I ask a Powerwall installer that I would not ask otherwise?
Two things specific to this product. First, if you are three-phase, ask them to list by name the circuits that stay live in an outage. Second, ask how your solar array will be strung into the integrated inverter, because a lazy retrofit design can leave panel capacity unused. Both answers should be in writing before you compare prices, since they are where two Powerwall quotes actually differ.
Is it worth buying Powerwall now that other brands outsell it?
Losing the market-share lead is not evidence of a worse product. What changed is that integrated modular stacks arrived with better pricing at scale and three-phase backup, which took two of Tesla’s arguments away. What did not change is the operating history and the virtual-power-plant support. Judge it on whether those two things matter to your household rather than on the sales table.
Can I get a Powerwall installed anywhere in Australia?
Effectively yes — this is one of the practical advantages of the longest-established product in the market. Certified installers operate across every state and territory, including regional areas where newer brands have thinner coverage. Remote installs still need a conversation about service response times, so ask where the nearest certified team is actually based rather than where the company advertises.
How many installers will contact me?
Up to three, subject to current coverage, eligibility and brand suitability. Your details do not go into a bidding pool and you will not spend a fortnight fielding calls. Matching a small number means each installer has a real chance of winning the work, which is what makes it worth their time to design the system properly rather than send a templated price.
Should I wait for the next version of the Powerwall?
There is always a next version, and waiting for it has a measurable cost: the federal battery rebate steps down at the start of 2027, so the same system bought later attracts less support. Tesla has also historically improved existing units through software rather than forcing a hardware upgrade, which takes some of the sting out of buying the current generation. Unless you have a specific reason to hold, the rebate timing is usually the stronger argument.
