Meet Redback A Brisbane-born, all-in-one battery system with switchgear pre-wired and load control included.

  • Arrives with switchgear pre-wired

Pre-wired switchgear and a pre-made control panel come as standard, which Redback says makes installation quicker.

  • Uses spare solar on appliances

Smart Load Control can switch an appliance on a relay from your export power or solar generation.

Ask which appliance goes on the relay, and whether its wiring is in your quote.

  • Designed in Australia

Redback designs its systems in Australia, and its RED-P1, RED-R1 and RED-R2 batteries are approved-listed.

Check the exact battery on your quote against the approved list.

The company behind it

Redback began as a Brisbane start-up making hybrid battery systems, and changed hands in 2024.

  • Brisbane start-up

Founded by Philip Livingston; the Queensland Government profiled it as a Brisbane start-up in 2016.

  • New owners, 2024

New owners took Redback out of administration in May 2024.

  • Queensland listing holder

Redback Energy Pty Ltd, of Salisbury, Queensland, holds most of its approved listings.

  • Rebates at quote

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount — roughly a quarter off installed cost — plus your state layer, applied upfront at quote.

Each state page lists its capital and regional centres, the battery rebate stack for that state, and the installers we match you with there. Not listed? Matching runs on postcode, so enter yours anyway.

Is Redback right for your home? Fit and warranty checks

A good fit if…

  • Households that want one Australian company accountable for inverter, battery, switchgear and software
  • Homes on networks with dynamic-export or backstop schemes that Redback documents commissioning for
  • Buyers who want load control built in rather than bolted on
  • Households planning to join a VPP and earn from the battery as well as save

Consider the limitations

  • You want to keep an existing inverter — the inverter is the product and third-party electronics are excluded from warranty
  • Your property is off-grid, which the warranty specifically excludes
  • You need the reassurance of an unbroken corporate history behind a ten-year relationship
  • You would rather not depend on a cloud connection to keep warranty cover intact

The Redback range

Smart Hybrid G3

Single-phase, low-voltage enclosure of stackable packs

Two inverter output sizes; the enclosure holds stackable packs and the switchgear arrives pre-wired.

Hybrid Battery Max

Single-phase, high-voltage cabinet of two to five units

The larger single-phase system; a separate management module sits above the battery units.

Hybrid Battery 3-Phase

Three-phase, high-voltage cabinet of two to five units

For bigger homes and small commercial sites; the inverter sets the ceiling on how much storage can ever be attached.

Redback specifications and source documents

Redback sells hybrid battery systems, not bare batteries: an Australian-engineered inverter with an enclosure of battery units beneath it, the switchgear pre-wired and a control panel made up before the truck leaves. The G3 range uses a low-voltage enclosure of stackable packs; the Hybrid Battery Max and the three-phase series move to high-voltage cabinets that take two to five units. Smart Load Control comes as standard, the system is commissioned and diagnosed through Redback’s cloud, and the warranty is issued by an Australian entity. The company entered administration in 2024 and emerged under a new owner, which is part of the story and should be part of the conversation.

  • Current Redback line-up in Australia: RED-R1-5000LV (4.864 kWh usable), RED-R2-16KLV (15.2 kWh usable), RED-P1-BE14HV (13.3 kWh usable), RED-P1-BE21HV (19.95 kWh usable), RED-P1-BE28HV (26.6 kWh usable), RED-P1-BE35HV (33.25 kWh usable). Source
  • Redback pairs with its own hybrid inverter: new solar-and-battery installs use one unit; a retrofit means replacing the existing inverter. Source
  • Usable capacity runs from 4.864 kWh to 33.25 kWh. Source
  • Capacity can be added later without replacing the inverter. Source
  • The manufacturer warranty is 10 years, with 70% of original capacity guaranteed at the end of it. Source
  • It works with Redback's own inverters only. Source
  • Listed models are on the Clean Energy Council approved battery list. Source
  • Any accredited installer can fit Redback under the manufacturer's warranty terms. Source
  • Redback’s Clean Energy Council listed enclosures qualify as hardware for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, whose STC factor has tapered by capacity band since 1 May 2026 — so the enclosure size you choose changes how much of the system is discounted at the full rate. Source

Redback questions, answered

Is Redback still a going concern after the 2024 administration?
SolarQuotes records that Redback entered voluntary administration in March 2024 and emerged that May under a new owner, and the company has since released a new generation of hybrid systems and published a 2025 warranty-delay resolution. Treat it as a business that survived a hard year: ask the installer how claims are handled now and who at Redback answers them.
Is Redback eligible for the federal battery rebate?
Redback’s current battery enclosures and low-voltage units appear on the Clean Energy Council approved battery list, which is the hardware gate for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. The rest is the install: solar connected, usable capacity inside the program band, an SAA-accredited installer, and no earlier claim at the address. The enclosure size decides how much sits inside the full-rate tier.
Can I add a Redback battery to my existing inverter?
No. Redback sells the inverter and the battery as one hybrid system, and its warranty excludes third-party inverters and battery modules. On a new install that is one decision fewer; on a retrofit it means your existing inverter comes out, which the quote should show as a line item rather than bury inside the system price.
What does Smart Load Control actually do?
The inverter decides, moment to moment, which loads run on solar, battery or grid, rather than simply charging and discharging one battery. It is included as standard on the current range and is the feature owners on SolarQuotes most often praise. It only helps if the right circuits are wired to it, so the quote should name which loads it will manage.
Will a Redback system run my house in a blackout?
It carries the circuits wired to its backup port, not the whole house by default. The inverter has a dedicated backup output, and which circuits sit on it is a design decision made at quote stage. Ask for them listed by name, and ask whether solar keeps charging the battery during an outage on your configuration, which Redback’s documentation describes for its systems.
Why does the warranty require an internet connection?
Because Redback commissions, monitors and diagnoses its systems through its cloud, and its warranty conditions require a stable connection to it. The hardware offers Wi-Fi, Ethernet and an optional 4G path, so in a house with weak Wi-Fi the installer should choose a wired or cellular link and test it from the portal before leaving.
Does Redback work with a virtual power plant?
Redback describes its range as VPP-compatible with major energy retailers, and SolarQuotes reports that Amber’s SmartShift program added all Redback batteries in late 2024. The practical step is to confirm your chosen retailer’s plan lists the exact inverter family you are quoted, because VPP plans are written around named hardware rather than brands.
