What does a solar battery actually cost in Australia?

Around $8,000 to $10,000 installed for a typical 10 kWh battery in 2026, within a broader market range of roughly $4,000 to $13,000 or more. The federal rebate takes roughly 30% off before you see the number — and install quality is where the real risk sits.

The short answer

For the size most Australian households buy — around 10 kWh of usable storage — expect roughly $8,000 to $10,000 fully installed in 2026. Look across the whole market and battery prices run from about $4,000 for a small unit up to $13,000 or more for large or premium systems.

Those numbers include the federal rebate, which is how Australian battery quotes are normally presented. They do not automatically include a switchboard upgrade, backup wiring, or an inverter replacement if your existing one can’t work with storage — all of which are common additions worth confirming before you compare totals.

What the federal rebate does to the price

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program launched on 1 July 2025 and works out to roughly a 30% discount on the installed cost of a home battery. It is delivered as small-scale technology certificates, the same mechanism as the solar panel rebate, and your installer applies it as an upfront discount rather than something you claim back later.

On a typical 10 kWh battery in 2026 that is around $2,500 off. Three rules matter when you are budgeting:

  • It steps down every 1 May. The factor dropped from 8.4 to 6.8 STCs per usable kWh on 1 May 2026, which took roughly $300 to $400 off the rebate for a 10 kWh battery. Waiting a year costs you money.
  • It is calculated on usable capacity, not nameplate. A battery advertised at 16 kWh might have 14 kWh usable, and the rebate follows the usable figure. Your quote should state which number it is using.
  • One battery rebate per address, permanently. If a previous owner claimed it at your address, it is gone — even though you personally have never claimed it.

The rebate is also tiered. The full factor applies to the first 14 kWh, then 60% from 14 to 28 kWh and 15% from 28 to 50 kWh, so a very large battery earns proportionally less back.

What drives the difference between two battery quotes

  • Usable capacity. The single biggest lever. Compare dollars per usable kWh rather than headline prices, or you will end up comparing a 10 kWh battery with a 13.5 kWh one.
  • Whether an inverter is included. Some batteries are AC-coupled and work alongside your existing solar inverter. Others need a hybrid inverter, and if yours has to be replaced, that is a significant cost inside the battery quote.
  • Backup scope. No backup, essential circuits only, or whole-home backup are three different jobs. Whole-home backup means more switchboard work and often a different product. A quote without backup is not comparable to one with it.
  • Installation complexity. Wall space, outdoor rating, cable runs, single-phase versus three-phase, and whether the switchboard needs upgrading before anything can be connected.
  • The installer. Same as with panels, this is where quotes diverge most, and it is the variable with the longest tail.

The risk the price tag doesn’t show

Between July 2025 and April 2026 the Clean Energy Regulator inspected 1,278 home battery installations under the rebate program. More than 60% were classified as substandard and 1.2% as unsafe — findings that included incorrect labelling, exposed wiring and missing isolators. Most of those installations used reputable, well-known battery brands.

That is the honest context for any battery price comparison. A battery is a high-voltage energy storage device bolted to your house for the next decade, and the rebate has pulled a large volume of new installers into the market very quickly. Before you claim the battery rebate, check who is installing it.

Is a battery worth it at these prices?

That depends almost entirely on how much of your own solar you would otherwise export for a few cents. A battery earns its money by letting you use your own generation in the evening instead of buying it back at the full retail rate, so the households that do best are the ones with a large gap between their daytime generation and their evening usage.

The arithmetic is worth doing before you shop: estimate the kilowatt-hours you currently export each day, multiply by the difference between your usage rate and your feed-in rate, and compare the annual figure against the installed price. If your feed-in tariff is generous and your evening usage is small, the payback stretches out. If you export a lot and pay a high evening rate, it shortens considerably.

Before you sign

  • Ask for dollars per usable kWh on every quote so the sizes are comparable.
  • Confirm the rebate is already deducted and which STC factor was used.
  • Get the backup scope in writing — which circuits stay live, and what the switchboard work costs.
  • Check the installer is accredited for that specific battery brand, and ask how many of them they have commissioned.
  • Get the workmanship warranty in writing, separate from the manufacturer’s product warranty.

Get matched with 2-3 vetted installers — typically 2+ years in business with a track record of decent reviews. Give them all the same brief on capacity and backup scope, and compare the quotes on the same basis.
