GoodWe inverter review

GoodWe inverters: ten years of warranty, behind a portal login.

A mid-market Chinese brand that Australian installers rate highly for doing what it says and commissioning without a fight. The catch is administrative, not technical — the ten-year warranty is conditional on registration, and the condition is easy to miss.

The verdict

A mid-market inverter Australian installers rate for commissioning without a fight. The ten-year warranty is real but conditional: it depends on the unit being registered on GoodWe’s SEMS portal, and that step is easy to miss.

Best for: Simple roofs where trading European repairability for a lower price is a defensible call.

Look elsewhere if: Shading is your real problem. A cheaper string inverter does not solve it, whatever the badge.

The 30-second take

  • GoodWe lifted its Australian standard warranty to a full 10 years across the grid-connect range, replacing the previous 5-year term.
  • It applies to inverters manufactured after 1 October 2020 and installed in Australia after 1 January 2021 — and it is conditional on the unit being registered on GoodWe's SEMS portal.
  • Before that change, getting to ten years was a paid extension. Now it is free and administrative.
  • The DNS series is the common residential single-phase unit: 3–6 kW, two MPPTs, IP65-rated so it can be mounted inside or out.
  • Reputation among Australian installers is solid — the recurring praise is straightforward commissioning, which is a proxy for fewer things going wrong on install day.

Where GoodWe sits in the market

GoodWe is the sensible middle. Not the cheapest inverter you will be offered and not a European-level price either, and the brand has enough Australian volume that most installers have fitted plenty of them and know their quirks. You can also find accredited GoodWe installers in your state.

The consistent feedback in the Australian trade is that GoodWe units are straightforward to commission. That sounds like an installer convenience rather than a homeowner benefit, and it is not: commissioning problems are where install-day corners get cut, where a job runs late and something gets left for "next week", and where a system ends up half-configured and under-reporting for years.

Ten years, but somebody has to register it

GoodWe now offers a 10-year full warranty across its entire range of grid-connect inverters in Australia, when the unit is registered on GoodWe's Smart Energy Management System — the SEMS portal. It covers inverters manufactured after 1 October 2020 and installed in Australia after 1 January 2021.

This used to cost money. The old standard was five years with paid extensions out to seven, ten, twelve and in some cases twenty-five. Making ten the default is a real improvement, and it moved the risk from your wallet to your paperwork. Want that checked against real quotes? Accredited GoodWe installers, state by state.

  • Registration is the trigger, not the purchase. An unregistered GoodWe is not obviously different — until you claim.
  • Ask for the SEMS account details at handover and log in yourself. If you can see your own generation data, it is registered.
  • Do not rely on the brand's own web copy to confirm your terms. When the change was announced, GoodWe's published documentation had not caught up with it.
  • Keep the invoice with the install date on it. The eligibility window is defined by manufacture and installation dates, so the paperwork is the proof.
“The warranty upgrade was free. What it cost was a step on handover day that nobody sends you a reminder about.”

The DNS series, in plain terms

The DNS is the unit most Australian homes get quoted: single-phase, 3 to 6 kW, two MPPT inputs, compact and light enough that mounting location is rarely an argument, and IP65-rated for indoor or outdoor installation.

Two MPPTs matters if your roof faces more than one direction. Each tracker manages its own string, so an east array and a west array can run at their own optimum instead of dragging each other down. If your quote puts a split-orientation roof on a single-tracker inverter, ask why.

The like-for-like comparison

  • Against Growatt: GoodWe generally wins on Australian support and commissioning experience at a similar price point.
  • Against Fronius or SMA: you are trading European repairability and brand longevity for several hundred to a few thousand dollars. On a simple roof that is a defensible trade.
  • Against Enphase or SolarEdge: different architecture entirely. If shading is your real problem, a cheaper string inverter does not solve it.

Whichever way that lands, the inverter brand is not the variable that decides whether your system is still working properly in year eight. Get matched with 2-3 vetted solar installers — typically 2+ years in business, with a track record of decent reviews — and make the SEMS registration an explicit line in the handover.
