What a SigenStor actually is — explained properly.

“5-in-1 AI-powered energy storage” is marketing. Underneath it is a genuinely clever idea: one tower that replaces four separate boxes, built from modules you stack like shelves. Here’s how it works and how to size one.

The 5-in-1 idea, translated

A conventional solar-plus-battery install is a small ecosystem of boxes: solar inverter, battery, battery inverter or hybrid, backup gateway, maybe an EV charger — often from different brands, each with its own warranty and app. The SigenStor collapses that into one stacked tower on one wall plate: energy controller (the inverter brain) on top, battery modules beneath it, all sharing one DC bus, one app and one warranty.

The practical wins are fewer conversion losses (Sigenergy claims up to 98.4% round-trip on the DC path), fewer trade coordination problems at install time, and a cleaner wall. The trade-off is commitment: you’re buying into one brand’s ecosystem — which is why the brand-trust question deserves its own read.

How the modular stack works

  • The controller sets the ceiling. Single-phase energy controllers come in 8, 10 and 12 kW; three-phase options serve bigger homes. This is the box the November 2025 recall touched (single-phase units sold Mar–Nov 2025 — since remedied with replacement plugs).
  • Modules set the storage. Battery modules of roughly 5–10 kWh each stack beneath the controller — up to 48 kWh in one tower.
  • You can grow later. Start at 10–16 kWh and add a module when an EV arrives, instead of buying a second complete system.
  • The EV module is a stack citizen too. The 12.5/25 kW DC charging module slots into the same tower — covered in our EV guide.
  • IP66 enclosure. Rated for genuine outdoor mounting — garage walls are not mandatory.

Blackouts, the app, and the settings that matter

In an outage the SigenStor switches to backup power near-instantly — fast enough that computers and Wi-Fi typically ride through. What stays on depends on how your installer designed the backup circuit: whole-home on a modest battery is a fantasy the good installers will talk you out of.

The mySigen app tracks generation, storage and consumption in real time, and holds the setting most owners discover too late: Backup Reserve. Before a forecast storm, raising the reserve toward 100% keeps the battery full for the outage instead of trading it into the evening peak.

Sizing one for an Australian home

Evening usage decides it. A typical grid-connected home drawing 16–20 kWh per day with solar usually banks most value from 10–16 kWh of storage — enough to carry the evening peak and overnight base load. The federal rebate’s full rate ending at 14 kWh pulls the economics toward that zone too.
