Two philosophies, one wall
The Powerwall 3 is Tesla’s answer refined: one sealed 13.5 kWh unit with an integrated solar inverter and a very high 11.5 kW continuous backup output. It’s simple, it’s proven, and it looks the part. When you want more storage, you add another whole unit — and the cost steps up accordingly.
The SigenStor is a tower of choices: pick a controller (single- or three-phase), then stack battery modules to the capacity you want, up to 48 kWh in one stack. Start smaller, grow later, and optionally slot a DC EV charging module into the same tower. It optimises for flexibility the way the Powerwall optimises for simplicity.
Where each one wins
- Capacity per dollar: SigenStor. A Powerwall 3 lands around $15,000 before extras for 13.5 kWh; SigenStor pricing scales by module, and at 16 kWh+ typically delivers more usable storage per dollar.
- Raw backup grunt: Powerwall 3. 11.5 kW continuous output runs more of the house simultaneously than SigenStor’s single-phase controllers.
- Three-phase homes: SigenStor. True three-phase configurations exist. The Powerwall 3 backs up a single phase — and once fully depleted during an outage it cannot black-start on a three-phase site.
- Growing later: SigenStor. Add a module, not a second $15k unit.
- Ecosystem polish: Powerwall 3. The Tesla app is the most mature in the game, and if you drive a Tesla the integration is seamless.
- EV charging: SigenStor. The optional bidirectional DC module (12.5/25 kW) has no Powerwall equivalent — Tesla’s home charging remains AC.
The blackout question, honestly
Both switch to backup near-instantly and both will run a well-designed essential-loads circuit for hours. The differences show at the edges: output ceiling (Powerwall higher on single-phase), phase coverage (SigenStor better on three-phase homes), and recovery behaviour when the battery runs flat mid-outage.

Pick the Powerwall 3 if you have single-phase power, want maximum backup output in a sealed proven package, and 13.5 kWh covers your evening load. Pick the SigenStor if you have three-phase power, want more than ~14 kWh now or later, want an outdoor-rated unit, or the EV charging module is in your future.
